FAQ
01

What is Commune Sound?

Commune Sound is an immersive sound and movement event in Melbourne. People drawn to ecstatic dance, conscious dance, 5Rhythms and Open Floor will find a familiar emphasis on free movement, but the format is unguided and music-led.

We want to make the freedom of movement-led dance available to a much wider community. Commune Sound isn't tied to a particular practice, belief system or scene. There are no steps to learn and no pressure to perform. It's simply a place to experience powerful sound, move in your own way and connect with other people.

02

What kind of music should I expect?

It's deliberately hard to pin down. Every DJ brings their own flavour, and no two nights are meant to sound the same. You might move through techno, rave, melodic house, tribal and global rhythms, deep and hypnotic electronics, indie pop, acoustic sounds, expansive and spiritual ethnic moments, vocals and deep downtempo - sometimes all in the same journey.

Expect curveballs too: a familiar anthem appearing out of nowhere, an unlikely indie track that suddenly makes perfect sense, or one of those secret weapons you didn't know you needed to hear on a dancefloor.

The genre can change. The intention doesn't: music with depth, energy and enough surprise to take you somewhere.

03

Can I come alone if I have no dance experience?

Yes. You do not need a partner, any dance experience or a particular way of moving. In many ways, coming solo is even better. You’re free to tune into the room, move in your own way without judgement and drop fully into the collective energy. That way, you can really send it.

04

Is the movement guided, or do I do my own thing?

There is no choreography. You choose how you move, while staying aware of the people around you.

05

What if I want to stop dancing or simply listen?

That is completely fine. You can slow down, pause or simply listen. Lie on the floor, sit down and watch, or just feel the vibrations of the music. Being part of the collective energy is what makes the room special, but no one is forcing you to do anything. Return to the floor whenever you feel like it.

06

Will there be a bar?

No. Commune Sound is an alcohol-free event.

07

What should I wear and bring?

Wear something comfortable to move in. Bring a water bottle and remember that shoes and belongings stay outside the dancefloor.

08

Why is the dancefloor free from shoes, phones and conversation?

It keeps attention on the music and makes the floor calmer for everyone moving through it. Phones and conversation can stay outside the dancefloor.

09

When should I arrive, and can I enter after it starts?

Doors open at 7:30pm with an ambient soundscape and time to stretch and warm up. The main set begins around 7:45pm. Arrive near the start if you can. Late entry is welcome. Enter quietly and take a moment to settle before joining the floor.

10

Where is St Brigid's Hall, and is the venue accessible?

St Brigid's Hall is at 378 Nicholson Street, Fitzroy North. The venue has step-free entry and accessible toilets. If you have access requirements, email studio@kitwebster.com before booking.

11

Is this a bit woo-woo or a cult?

No. It's much simpler than that: a dancefloor, people, music and lights. No sharing circles. No lectures.
